Make Bathing Your Dog a Pleasant Experience With Clicker Training

Bathing your canine
companion is important to keep its fur/hair and skin healthy. To make the
experience as stress-free and easy as possible, gradually introduce your dog to
bathing with clicker training for each step of the process. If you take the
time to teach your dog to look forward to their bath by using positive
reinforcement and treats, you’ll both appreciate the time together … and you’ll
finish much faster!
For best results,
use clicker training to teach your pet basic obedience skills first: sit, stay,
come, heel, and down. Once your pet has become proficient in the clicker
training method, you’ll have a much easier time training him to be bathed.
To teach your dog
how to enjoy a bath, start by putting him in a bathroom tub or backyard kiddie
pool with no water. Every time you put him in, click and treat. Some animals
are scared of water, so clicker train your dog to be comfortable with the sound
and feel of water by first turning on the hose, then pick him up and go stand
next to the water, and then click and treat. Continue water training by
spraying him lightly with water and then click and treat. Towel him off well
and treat again. After a few days of this water and tub training, he should be
ready for his first bath.
A few tips to
make bathing a pleasant experience for your dog:
- Use a
bathmat so he doesn’t slip.
- Dogs
don’t like soap in their eyes or ears, so put a cotton ball in each ear and use
a washcloth and tearless shampoo.
- Make
sure the water is warm.
- Comb or
cut out fur tangles before the bath so he doesn’t associate the bath with
pulling his wet hair.
Remember to
continue using the clicker for every step of the process so your dog learns to
associate a bath with getting a reward. Over time, he’ll get used to the bath
and you’ll be able to stop giving treats, but always keep praising and
encouraging him throughout the process. Make bathing a fun time for your dog
and you with clicker training!
